Andy Rudin was the first member of The Energy Cooperative's Solar Buyback Program.  Announced in our Press Release on June 5, 2002, Rudin's solar home and The Energy Cooperative's Buyback Program,  also generated both local and national attention.

Andy Rudin's system is unique in that it has been up and operational since 1998, making him a real pioneer for Solar Energy in the Philadelphia area.

His system particulars include a Grid-tied 2.7 kW PV array on his south-facing roof, and thirty-six 75 watt panels made by British Petroleum.

He generates approximately

2800 kWh per year.  If you want

Steve Bunville joined The Energy Cooperative in September 2002.  Using grant money from the Sustainable Development Fund  Steve added a 1500 watt solar tracking array to his already existing 1548 watt roof-mounted array after discovering the Solar Buyback Program.  In contrast to a  static roof-mounted array, the solar Tracking Array contains technology that senses the position of the sun and positions the array to point towards it throughout the day.  On a sunny day the array may move as much as every 5 minutes.  On a cloudy day it may position itself in a table-top position directly facing the overhead clouds.  Overall, about 30% more power is generated from a tracking array than a static roof-mounted array.

In total capacity Steve Bunville's
 system is 3.0  kW, and
generates approximately 3000
kWh per year.  Find out about

Ellen Sherk joined The Energy Cooperative's Solar Buyback Program in August 2002.  Her system, installed
on a 4 bedroom home in Ft. Washington, PA,  is 3kW in capacity and generates approximately 2236 kWh per year.  She  expects to offset her annual electricity bill by about 20%.

In October, 2002, Ellen was recognized at  Penn Future's annual Green Power Awards with a Green Solar Buyer Award.  Ellen Sherk  is proud to be one of the Delaware Valley's solar pioneers, and says that her decision to go solar originated from a strong sense that it was "...time to do something right for the environment."

Ellen is definitely doing right for
 the environment now-  and we
hope her example will inspire
many others.

One of our newest members, Steve Oliver, has just finished  building a new home  in West Conshohocken, PA which has numerous green features including an air exchange system, whole house fan, instant hot water, bamboo and porcelain tile flooring and a water harvesting system. Pictured on the right, the home also has passive and active solar panels which are producing 3.8 KW of Solar.

Patricia and Patrick Donoghue from Glenmoore, PA sell solar to the Co-op that is generated by their  3.2 kW system (pictured right) The system is  South facing and consists of 20 panels arranged 2 X 10.  It took about a week to install. It consists of a Sunny Boy Solar Inverter and BP solar panels and is grid-tied.

The system was installed in December,  2003 by Mesa Environmental, one of the participating contractors in the Sustainable Development Fund's PV Solar Grant program.  To download  a list of participating contractors, click here.  The grant from Sustainable  Development Fund  will end up paying for about half of the system.

Reid and Susan Rowlands from Landenberg, PA joined the Energy Co-op December, 2003.  They sell back solar produced by a  5kw system consisting of 48 panels from Astro Power, installed by CMI Electric. The panels sit atop an 11,000 square foot  barn that is being converted to a residence with as much energy efficiency as possible.

The barn walls and ceiling are 4 to 6" of sprayed foam, the 12 ton's of A/C are three 19 seer Train units.

There will be a solar hot water

system to supply 100% of domestic

water and some of the demand for

 the radiant heat water supply.

Larry O'Donnell of the O'Donnell Roofing Company installed his 4080-watt array in December of 2005 with monetary help from the Sustainable Development Fund.  To date, the system has generated 11,500 kWh.  At 4100 kWh per year, this comprises 35% of Larry's entire household usage.

Larry can help others with questions or concerns about solar panel installations and encourages interested parties to contact him.  New grant money will soon be available through the Alternative Energy Investment Act, and O'Donnell Roofing Company can perform photovoltaic installation for approximately $9.00 per watt, warranted for a period of 25 years. Please click here for contact info and additional info about Larry's solar system.

In Norwood, William Gardiner has installed a solar power array with a  4.2KW capacity.  The system consists of 36 solar panels facing W/SW, and 2 "Sunny Boy" DC/AC invertors.

The system works even when the cloud cover is thick. The contractor who installed the system had come over to check up on a day when the array was half covered with snow, AND it was raining and the system was still generating electricity!

The Gardiners originally got the system to do something   positive for the environment while saving on the energy  bills.

"I am looking forward to seeing how                                 much electricity we can produce in                                    the summer!"                                                                                              --William Gardiner
