Hydroelectric power is a popular form of
generation the world over, accounting for a significant portion of all
electricity.
"Small hydro" refers to hydroelectric power
generation suited to small community or industrial needs - in this case,
facilities less than or equal to 30 megawatts in size. "Low impact
hydro" refers to hydroelectric power that has a minimal effect on the
surrounding environment and wildlife. All hydroelectric energy
sources used by The Energy Cooperative are small and/or low impact, and
all low-impact hydro facilities we use are certified by the
Low Impact Hydropower Institute.
